Basic Vinaigrette

Here’s a basic, simple vinaigrette that can be varied to suit your taste. It’s perfect for drizzling on those tender greens or even on grilled vegetables.

1/2 cup olive oil
1/3 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon Dijon-style mustard
1/4 cup sliced scallions, some of the green part included
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste

Whisk everything together thoroughly. Let sit for several hours to blend flavors before using.

Vary by adding lemon or orange zest, or a tablespoon of garlic oil; by using flavored vinegar; or by adding a teaspoon or two of finely minced herbs.

Yield: about 1 cup dressing

I’ve never seen such security. I have a qtr million dollars in an investment firm, and their security doesn’t equal your’s. Who would want to break into a garden club?

I do have a problem with a tomato plant, for which I am seeking an opinion. I notice today, the sides of stem has bumps. Is this a fatal condition? This is a container plant on lanai. A couple wks ago, it developed a white scale on underneath side of leaves. I sprayed it with Sevin which got rid of that. A few days later, whiteflies swarmed it and the other two new plants close by. I sprayed Ortho on it for them. I was worried about too much chemical too close together. I sprayed water on this plant to wash off after a few hrs. Whiteflies swarmed again next eve. Had to spray again with Ortho. Is this a reaction to that? It has had match head sized tomatoes on it, that never get any bigger. I’ve been concerned about that. The leaves of the plant look fine and it has new growth.

Bumps on the stem of the tomato plant:
These are perfectly normal and if they come into contact with moist soil, they will develop into roots.

You don’t say which Ortho product you used for the whiteflies. Ortho is a brand name. Personally, I would spray with Safer-Soap and then plant marigolds or calendula nearby. That’s a much safer, more natural way to control an infestation.
